OHS Alert – Preventing Collapse of Excavations

This OHS alert released by Workcover NSW illustrates the importance of investigating the ground conditions prior to conducting any deep excavation works. JSEA and work procedures need to be in place to carefully document the procedure of excavation to ensure the integrity of the excavated face is maintained. Measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of soil collapse can include batters, benched cuts and in areas where there is limited work area the use of temporary retaining structures including soldier piles walls, soil nailing and shotcrete, shoring trenches etc…
